No, it does not require the app to use the scale. The scale can function on its own including Tare / Unit changes. When you change the unit into oz there will be a small blue LED indicate that it is in OZ mode. There is another small orange LED that will indicate charging. I made these LEDs hidden (not visible) when not active to make sure the design looks good.

Will you be developing an Android app?

Yes, we will also develop the android app for the scale, I think it is very important to have the acaia coffee scale work on android as well! But at the time we started the project, the android bluetooth 4.0 is not officially supported, for now the Android app is one version behind the iOS app.

Will the app have a mode of reflecting the current weight on the scale?

Yes, it will have a large reading of the weight in the APP besides the coffee brewing page. It will function like a nice remote display of the scale. We do not want to lose the functions of kitchen scale but want to make it better.

Will you support Windows Phone?

At this moment, we have plans for iOS and Android, other platforms will have to see the population of our users. There are currently some developer partners working on other operation system, once they have came up with some Apps for the acaia coffee scale, we will share it with the acaia community, if you are interested into joining our developer program, you can email acaia at

Will the app be able to display just the weight to function as a kitchen scale?

Yes, it will have a large reading of the weight in the APP besides the coffee brewing page. It will function like a nice remote display of the scale. We do not want to lose the functions of kitchen scale but want to make it better.

Can I participate in the beta testing for the APP?

No Problem, we would love to add you to our list of early access of the app! At this stage, we need to get as much help as possible, so together we can deliver a brilliant coffee scale. We’ll let you know when we release a beta version of the app, and please feel free to let us know if you have any idea or expectation to the acaia coffee brewing app.

What is the acaia brewing print?

This is our answer to the people who asked how we can make coffee taste better. During the process of connected with Acaia Coffee Scale, we create a chart related with time and water. This chart will show how this brewing process is completed.

By using this chart, We get to know how my brewing process looks like comparing with experts who can accurately control the blooming time, infusion time and stability of the pouring process. This gives us an idea of what might be the possible reason for making this great cup of coffee, here’s a video of the beta version of the acaia coffee scale.

It may not be the final answer for different results of coffee brewing, but sure gives us the most accurate information of these variables. The Brewing Print is a combination of design and the integration of technology, and this is how it will help us visualize and brew a better coffee, more importantly, we can tweet and share it with people who care about coffee.

Can I use it as an everyday kitchen scale?

Yes, We will have a page that can show only the weight on the scale to function as a nice remote display of the scale! And it will be able to switch between units (grams, ounces)

Will a standard espresso portafilter fit on the scale?

If the portafilter is within 6*6 inches it should be able to fit on the scale. The scale surface is not that large because when we design the acaia coffee scale we try to keep the size compact.

Have you thought about incorporating a timer into the scale?

Yes, there is a dual mode implemented on the acaia coffee scale, with basic stopwatch and weighing feature at the same time, and also there’s the solo weighing mode in g/oz and stopwatch mode.

Why don’t you make other colors available?

There are some difficulties in making different colour in the acaia. That’s why we have to limit it to certain quantity. Of course we would also want to have more colors available, we have tested with many many colors and we really want to provide them too, we will produce a more colourful line of the acaia when we can solve all the existing production difficulties.

What is the capacity?

2KG 0.1 now.

What the stabilization time is like for the acaia Coffee Scale?

For division = 1g, stable time would be less than 1 second.

For division = 0.1g, it would be around 1~2 seconds.

Some scales are notoriously bad when heat is placed on them (change); have u addressed this?

Yes: scales are prone to heat because of the sensor. It is always a challenge for scale makers. We do our best to minimize the effect of the heat by designing double layer of plate and also using a different type of sensor, for best results, we highly recommend you to use a heat resistant pad under hot objects while weighing.
